The world has perished. In the ruins of the place that was once Beijing, crumbling skyscrapers stand guard. Nestled between them is the Forbidden City, a pristine haven shielded by ancient forces. Inside the palace, a small core of dedicated servants are scrambling to take care of their deathly ill emperor. There's no saving him, not after the power was cut, yet they do what they can to ease his passing. But some of them tell stories. Stories of a creature that lives by the lake. The Nightingale, they call it, and it is said that it once sang an emperor back to life.
One young serving girl sets out to find the Nightingale and plea with it to save her beloved emperor. Only what she finds is not what she expected. A leech-like spirit who changes shape to be what you most long for it to be, the Nightingale is not the benevolent creature from the stories. And once you make a deal with it, there's no way back.
